Another two weeks has come and gone. I just need to get through the next 3 weeks and then I’ve finally reached taper time. Maybe it will make me crazy, but right now I am really looking forward to it!
We had a preview of some autumn weather during week 11 and it was glorious. I actually broke out my arm warmers for my Friday morning 8 miler which has me thinking about what I’m going to wear race day. It looks like temperatures should drop down again next weekend which should give me an opportunity to try a couple different options out before race day.
At the end of week 11, I had my first 18 mile run. I know it sounds crazy, but I actually enjoyed it! It wasn’t as cool out as Friday morning, but it was still pretty good weather given the length of our run. Sacouny came to our training group to take some photos.
I snapped a photo with my lovely 9run5 buddies, but did the run with the 10:30 group.
Around mile 12 we started to play games – desert island and ABCs with movie titles. It was a good way to keep our minds off of running, but thinking after that long proved to be tough. Apparently I know a lot of movie titles from ones made in the 90s? The downside of our starting point last Saturday is the uphill finish, but I enjoyed pushing through to the top because I’m crazy and I like hills. I saw a lot of people I knew out running that morning over the course of the 3 hours and my group joked with me that I just knew everyone on the trail.
Afterward, I took my first ice bath. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, but temperatures had picked up at the end of our run and I was pretty warm. I don’t think I will appreciate it as much as the weeks go on and it’s not as warm for our runs. I definitely think it helped with recovery though. I totaled 45 miles for the week.
As the pattern goes, week 12 was a cut-back week. I introduced another pair of shoes into rotation this week since I don’t think either pair of my shoes would make it to race day if I didn’t rotate a second pair in at this point. The neon yellow GT’s will be my race day shoes since they are lighter than the Kayano’s.
I was really happy to have a cut back week so I could take it easy before my big week 13. The temperatures were back to normal this week and Wednesday’s tempo run was a hot one, but I was proud of myself for pushing through and maintaining my pace. Our ragweed has been really high lately and Thursday night I started to not feel great. I decided to skip my run Friday morning and sleep in. I figured that my body could probably use the rest even if it was just from allergies. Regardless, I have been treating it as if it is a cold just to be on the safe side!
Saturday morning I woke up bright & early to meet Courtney downtown to run the back half of the marathon course one last time. We were supposed to do this in two weeks, but she had something else come up so we thought this would be a good time to do it. Courtney is using a different training plan than me and has assigned training paces for her runs. We compromised and agreed to run around a 10:15 pace. I knew this would be a little fast for my zone 2 given the morning temperatures, but figured it’d be ok since it was only 13 miles. Her training plan is a high-mileage, fairly high-intensitiy plan and she was really feeling it on our run yesterday. We took a couple of breaks which I always welcome. Around the end of our run she told me she was done so I finished up the little last bit of it myself and met her back at our cars. Overall I felt pretty good on the run. Despite my skipped run on Friday, I still wrapped up the week with 31 miles.
Next weekend is my first 20 mile run. I have a lot of mileage this upcoming week and am planning to do my tempo tomorrow morning so I can sleep in a little later (2 hours later to be exact!) than I would if I did it later in the week. I also plan to hit the trail for my tempo for a change of scenery from my regular morning’s and a little easier maneuvering around roads. Other than that, my husband & I have a very quiet and lazy 3-day weekend planned (we’ve been watching movies all morning so far!) and I am taking full advantage of it.
THREE WEEKS UNTIL TAPER.
Congrats to everyone that raced this weekend.
